Every figure traces to a public file or a documented computation. Nothing is invented.

Data vintage: 2025-10 to 2026-10 · 104,239 carriers ranked

Sources

Company Census File

USDOT number, legal name, fleet size, operation type, self-reported mileage. Daily refresh.

Vehicle Inspection File

Roadside inspection records with violation and out-of-service totals. 3 years published.

Vehicle Inspections and Violations

Violation-level records with CFR part number, mapped to SMS BASIC categories.

Crash File

Police-reported crashes involving commercial motor vehicles, deduplicated to one record per crash event per carrier.

SMS methodology

The BASIC category frame. Percentiles here are our own computation, not FMCSA scores.

What was joined

Trailing 12 months of the Vehicle Inspection File and the Crash File, joined on USDOT number to the Company Census File. Carriers enter the snapshot with at least 5 roadside inspections in the window and a matching census record.

Name matching

Search normalizes names before matching: uppercase, punctuation stripped, and common business suffixes removed (LLC, Inc, Corp, Ltd, Co, plus transport, trucking, logistics, services). USDOT number search is exact and always preferred.

BASIC frame

Violations map to SMS BASIC categories by CFR part number: 392 to Unsafe Driving, 395 to Hours-of-Service, 383 and 391 to Driver Fitness, 382 to Controlled Substances/Alcohol, 393 and 396 to Vehicle Maintenance, and hazmat parts 107 and 171-180 to HM Compliance. Crash Indicator comes from the Crash File. Remaining parts (390 general and others, about 3% of violations) count toward the overall violation rate but toward no BASIC.

Peer groups and percentiles

A peer group is a fleet-size band (1, 2-5, 6-20, 21-100, 101-500, 501+ power units) crossed with operation type (Interstate, Intrastate, Other). Within a peer group of at least 30 carriers, each rate is converted to a percentile: 100 times the average rank divided by group size minus one. Higher percentile means worse relative safety, following the SMS convention. These percentiles are computed by us from the snapshot. They are not FMCSA's official SMS scores.

What was left out

Carriers with fewer than 5 inspections in the window, carriers with no census match, and carriers with missing mileage (excluded only from per-mile rates, with the count published). Driver names and other personal data are not in the public files and never enter the product.
