How safe is this motor carrier, compared to its peers?
We join 12 months of FMCSA roadside inspections and crash reports to the carrier census, then rank each carrier against carriers of the same size and operation type. You see the crash rate, the violation rate, and exactly which risk category drives the score.

Example: a top-10 US carrier by fleet size
FEDERAL EXPRESS CORPORATION · USDOT 86876 · 138,481 power units
Peer-group percentile bars across the 7 SMS BASIC categories. Higher percentile means worse relative safety.
What you get per carrier
Crash rate per million miles
Reportable crashes divided by self-reported annual mileage. Carriers with missing mileage are excluded from this metric, and the exclusion count is published.
Violation and out-of-service rates
Share of roadside inspections that found violations, and share that ended with a driver or vehicle placed out of service.
Peer-group percentiles
Each rate is ranked against carriers in the same fleet-size band and operation type. The peer-group definition sits next to every percentile.
Risk concentration
The three BASIC categories where the carrier exceeds its peer median by the most, with raw violation counts.
What this does not show
- Percentiles are computed from this public snapshot using the SMS BASIC frame. They are not FMCSA's official SMS scores.
- Mileage is self-reported by carriers on the MCS-150 form. Carriers with missing mileage are excluded from per-mile rates.
- FMCSA publishes monthly with a lag of several weeks. Figures carry their vintage date.
- US motor carriers only in this version.
